Ultimate Guide to the Broken Arrow Skyrace: Lake Tahoe’s Premier Trail Running Event
The Broken Arrow Skyrace, presented by ACG, is a world-class, three-day mountain running event featuring eight iconic race distances. From June 18–21, elite athletes and recreational trail runners will gather at Palisades Tahoe to experience an unforgettable alpine adventure “where the mountains meet the sky.”
Why the Broken Arrow Skyrace is Unique
Designed in the tradition of classic European Skyraces, this event brings a unique style of mountain running to California. Unlike most domestic trail races, the majority of the course takes place above the tree line.
Runners will tackle challenging high-altitude terrain characterized by:
- Steep vertical gains and losses
- Off-trail technical scrambling
- Exposed ridges and hand lines
- Snow slopes and a custom ladder climb
As you push your limits, you will be treated to spectacular, panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, the Jewel of the Sierra Nevada, and the unmistakable high-alpine ruggedness of Palisades Tahoe.
Broken Arrow Skyrace Distances & Challenges
Whether you are an elite ultramarathoner or a weekend warrior, the event features a distance for every skill level, including eight primary races and a dedicated kids’ event:
- 46K & 23K: The flagship technical distances.
- 18K & 11K: Fast, scenic alpine loops.
- The Ascent: A pure uphill vertical challenge.
- Iron Face Challenge: A rugged, scramble-heavy race.
- The Triple Crown: A brutal combination of the VK, 23K, and 46K.
- The Iron Crown: The ultimate test combining the IFC, 23K, and 46K.
- Kids Race: A fun introduction to trail running for the whole family.
A High-Alpine Festival Experience
The Broken Arrow Skyrace is more than just a trail race; it is a community celebration. After crossing the finish line, elite and recreational participants celebrate together in the valley. The post-race festival features first-class food, local craft beer, live music, educational seminars, outdoor films, and family-friendly activities.
